Opportunities Are Like Buses

I want to tell you a quick story about a time I missed the bus.

I was working and living in the United Kingdom at the time.

And I had a whale of a time.

I was there on a two-year working-holiday Visa.

I did just that. I worked while having a blast of a holiday for two years.

Never mind the good times, I learnt some valuable life lessons along the way.

One of those lessons is about what buses and opportunities have in common.

And now you are probably asking, WTF?!

Okay, so hold your horses as all will be revealed soon, but first …

I was working at a Pub in the quaint Northamptonshire Village called Whittlebury.

When the time came for one of my days off which was usually on a Tuesday, I would take the bus to Towcester, which was the closest town from where I worked and lived.

I would go to Tesco’s to buy groceries, or I would visit the charity shop and buy a next to brand new Levi Jean for £ 5.00.

Or, I would hang out at the Brave Old Oak for a couple of pints of Lager, some grub, shits and giggles.

After all was said and done, I would take the bus back to The Fox & Hounds to continue the jolly-good roll I was on.

It would also happen at times that I’d miss the bus by less than a couple of lingering diesel fumes.

I was a couple of pints ahead though, swearing like a trooper and kicking the bus shelter like a mad man.

I was pissed off because now I had to call a taxi and that would set me back at least £ 10.00, which I would rather spend on the “good” things of life.

I was angry because I missed the bus by an inch.

Yes! Real Bummer, I know.

Like Vin Diesel says in the Fast & Furious Franchise, whether you win by an inch or a mile, a win is a win.

In my case, a missed bus is a missed opportunity to be on time

Nevertheless, I would soon learn not to despair.

It turned out that they extended the bus service times but didn’t update the schedule at the shelter.

The beauty was that there was a next one coming.

Now you are probably sitting at the edge of your seat, about to shut me up because I’m not getting to the point about opportunities.

Well, mate. Opportunities are like buses.

There’s always another one on the way, even if it’s the next morning.

If you happen to miss one, don’t beat yourself up about it.

Be sure not to spend too much time regretting it so that you end up missing the next one.

The quicker you forgive yourself and accept things for what they are, the more quickly you open yourself up for the next opportunity to present itself.

Then, when it does, you will be embracing it with arms wide open.

You will be sure not to miss it again.

Have a good one and chat soon,

Reinhardt
